Remembering Julie Chen

Missing You
Mei-Yun Lin - Mother

During my days of teaching in Taiwan, I waited and waited until the day I turned 55 so that I could retire; I really wanted so much to live with my youngest daughter. After I retired, I came to America so that I got to see her beautiful face and hear her radiant laughter lift my spirits everyday. Everyday, I would cook for her her favorite dishes, and she would tell me, "Mom, your cooking is really good!" and would share her daily events with me. During that time, I felt like I was the luckiest and happiest woman in the world.

Suddenly, God took her away from me. Even to this day, I continue to ask God, "Why, why must my heart be broken, why did you take away the light of my life from me?" I will probably never know the answer to my pleas, so I decided to continue what my daughter started. My daughter was full of love, and I wanted to extend that love in helping her continue what she wanted to do in her lifetime. I started a scholarship in her name at the school I taught at in Taiwan to help 20 underprivileged students every year pay for tuition and expenses. I hope I can help to influence people so positively as she did with every passing day in her life.

Julie, today is Thursday again, and when Auntie comes back home, we are going to buy flowers and we will come to see you. Julie, I love you and I will miss you forever.

-Ma
